Violet Smooth Yellow

Viola pensylvanica
Family - Violaceae - Violet

The violets can be confusing, there are so many different varieties and then there are variations within the same species. There are several yellow violet species, the Smooth Yellow just one representative.

The Smooth Yellow Violet is another early blooming spring woodland wildflower. It blooms in mid April here in southeastern Indiana. It grows from four to twelve inches tall on damp, shaded slopes in dense woodland. It’s fragrant flowers are held above the leaves.

Violet flowers are self fertile and they generally spread freely in a favorable spot. The yellow violets don’t seem to be quite as prolific as the other types, but I have come into places in the woodland where these wildflowers color the spring forest floor with their beauty.
