Strawberry Barren
Walsensteinia fragarioides
Family - Rosaceae - Rose

This member of the strawberry family bears no edible fruit. It is a pretty wildflower of the marginal areas near woodlands often lining old lanes and hiking trails. The one half inch diameter flowers are bright yellow, borne on a separate stalk than the leaves, and grows from three to eight inches tall.

Strawberry Barren Barren strawberry prefers full sun, and blooms in mid to late May here in southeastern Indiana. It has no runners and is classified as a fruit, not a berry. The fruit is small and inedible.

You will find Barren Strawberry in clearings in the middle and near woodland areas. Its bright yellow flowers are quite showy when the plants are numerous.
