Wild Blue Phlox Blue Phlox

Phlox divariticata
Family - Polemoniaceae
- Phlox

The Wild Blue Phlox literally blankets some of the woodlands here in southeastern Indiana in May. The clusters of flowers dot the forest floor, a wonderful foil for the white Spring Beauties, Dutchman’s Breeches and Toothwort.

Blue Phlox grows from ten to twenty inches tall, the plant is somewhat sticky. It can be found blooming in April through June, depending upon the locality. Here in our area it begins in mid April and continues through mid May, mostly in woodlands.

Another name for Wild Blue Phlox is Wild Sweet William. This is one of the prettiest spring woodland wildflowers. It also has one of the longer bloom times of the early spring flowers.
