This early spring woodland wildflower is a rather odd looking inhabitant of rich woodlands here in southeastern Indiana, mostly on wooded slopes. It will form a red fruit later in the year.

The Yellow Mandarin resembles a close relative, the Nodding Mandarin which has creamy white flowers. The flowers are about one inch long and hang either singly or in pairs.

The Yellow Mandarin grows from eight to twenty-four inches tall. It flowers between April and May, depending upon location. Here in Southeastern Indiana it blooms in early April.
