Larkspur Dwarf

Delphinium tricorne
Family - Ranunculaceae
- Buttercup

The Dwarf Larkspur prefers the forested slopes of the woodland. This spring wildflower blooms mid to late April here in southern Indiana. The blue flower spikes quite showy against the leaf mould of the forest floor. Its height can range from four to twenty four inches.

This delphinium is a member of the vast buttercup family, so many of which make up the spring flowering wildflower mix here in Indiana. The species name refers to the fruit which has three horns.

The Dwarf Larkspur has a close resemblance to the Rocket Larkspur which inhabits many peoples flower gardens. The larkspurs should be eliminated from fields of grazing cattle, as they contain an alkaloid which is poisonous to grazing animals.
