Hepatica is an early spring wildflower, blooming early, here in Indiana usually in
early to mid April. The leaves to early herbalists seemed to resemble the human
liver, so they prescribed it for ailments of the liver and accounts for the common
name, liverleaf.
Hepatica is an evergreen wildflower, its leaves surviving the frosts of winter and
persisting until spring when new leaves take their place, the older ones dieing and
falling away. It is the old leaves which may take on a reddish color you may find on
some plants, newer leaves being a fresh green color.
