Trail Two
Versailles State Park
2.75 miles moderate
Trail Two at Versailles State Park is composed of two loops, one of which circles the
campground, the other through the forested hills east of the campground. The best
place to enter the trail is the parking lot at Oak Grove Shelter. From this parking
lot you have two options. Either enter Trail One at the electric pole, turn right
after reaching Trail One, about twenty feet, and hike to the junction of the two
trails just behind the Shelter. Turn right here. Or you can hike the gravel drive
back to the Shelter and enter the trail there.
Either way, after you have hiked north a short distance you will reach a "Y". We
usually turn right here. If you go down the hill, there is a rather steep stairway
which must be climbed up to the portion which passes on the north side of the
campground. We usually like to descend this stairway, as it is much easier to go
down than it is up.

Turning right, the trail passes through the woodland descending to a point where
you will cross the road which leads to the campground. The trail reenters the forest
just across the road. After reentering the forest, another junction is reached. You
can go either way, as the trail returns to this point. We usually go straight,
gradually descending along a ridge which in fall or early spring gives a rather
impressive view of Fallen Timbers Creek.
Soon you will reach the junction of Trail Three. Go left, across the wooden bridge.
The trail here passes through the wooded slopes above the Creek, again a nice view.
The trail rejoins itself at the junction you passed earlier. Go right here, the trail
passes north of the campground and descends the steps mentioned earlier.
The trail passes along a small stream, and is wet during rainy spells. Finally you
will reach a set of steps which ascend to Oak Grove Picnic Shelter and you are back
where you started.
The trail passes mostly through a the mature hardwood forests of Versailles State
Park and has plenty of wildflowers in the spring. Fall foliage is a feature in the
autumn. Trail Two is a nice trail, good for about an hour and a half or so.
