Brown County State Park is one of Indiana's most popular parks. It is located on State Road 46 about sixteen miles west of Columbus, Indiana and about two miles east of Nashville. The park has much to offer the visitor. Hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, horseback riding are among the outdoor activities which can be enjoyed at Brown County State Park.

There are twelve miles of hiking trail in the park. These range from easy, less than a mile long trails to longer moderate and rugged trails. The longest trail is 3.5 miles. Our favorite, Trail 2, is a moderate two miles long. The trailhead is located near the Abe Martin Lodge trailhead.

Equestrian experiences are also pleasant at Brown County. You may bring your own horses and stay overnight or longer in the Horsemans Campground. The entrance is located on State Road 135 on the east boundary of the park. There is also a saddle barn where horse and ponies are availble for day use. There are seventy miles of horse trails in the park. There are hay rides available seasonally

. There are several picnic areas scattered throughout the park. Some of the tables are located on vistas offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Some of the shelters may be reserved for family reunions, weddings, and other special occassions. There is fire wood available for picnicers and campers at the camp store. The picnic areas are equipped with grills, restrooms and tables.

Camping at Brown County State Park is a popular activity. There are 401 Class A sites. These sites are equipped with electricity and water connections. There is a camp store, rally campground, flush toilets, and hot water showers. Camping is permitted year round.

The swimming pool is located close to the north entrance at State Road 46. The pool opens Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Abe Martin Lodge offers 84 lodge rooms, 24 cabins, two large meeting rooms, and a dining room. The lodge, including 20 family cabins, is open year round. The cabins are completely furnished.

Fishing at the two lakes may yield nice catches of smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and other game fish found in Indiana. An Indiana fishing liscense is required and may be purchased at the park office. Rowboats and canoes are permitted on 17 acre Ogle Lake. No boats may be launched in 7 acre Strahl Lake.

You may encounter a wide variety of birds and wildlife on the various trails. Raccoon, white tailed deer, squirrels are all found here in abundance. Birds are also plentiful in the heavily forested hills in the park. Wild turkey, blue jays, cardinals are just a few of what may be found here.

Brown County State Park isn't just a park, its an experience. The lovely forested hills can be enjoyed from your car on over twenty miles of asphalt roadway, on its eighteen miles of trails, or on horseback.
