Ripley County is located in southern Indiaana and is in the heart of southeastern Indiana. The county was formed by an act of the Indiana General Assembly on January 7, 1818. It was named after General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, a war hero of the War of 1812.

Eleven townships are included in Ripley County. These are Laughery, Adams, Jackson, Delaware, Franklin, Center, Otter Creek, Johnson, Washington, Shelby, and Brown. The school districts in the county are Batesville, Milan, South Ripley, Jac-Cen-Del and East Central.

The incorporated towns in Ripley County are Batesville, Sunman, Milan, Versailles, Osgood, Napoleon. Batesville, at population 6,000, is the largest, and Versailles is the County Seat.

Unincorporated towns in Ripley County are Cross Plains, Delaware, Friendship, Morris, New Marion, Old Milan, and Pierceville.

Transportation in Ripley County is excellent, as it is serviced by State Road 129, State Road 48, State Road 229, State Road 46, State Road 350, State Route 101, US 50 and US 421.

Ripley County is primarily a rural area, with excellent farmland in the west central portion of the county. The remainder is hilly, forested land with abundant wildlife such as whitetail deer, turkey, and songbirds. Laughery Creek drains the majority of the county, its source near Napoleon, in the northeast corner, and exiting the state near Friendship, in the southeast corner.

Versailles State Park is located near Versailles in the central part of Ripley County. The park is the location of Versailles Lake, over 200 acres, which is formed by a dam across Laughery Creek. There are three golf courses and many lakes and streams affording excellent fishing for the angler.

Industry in Ripley County tends to be concentrated in Batesville. Hil-Rom, a major hospital manufacturer, Batesville Casket Company, Batesville Tool and Die, Med-Mizer and Heartwood Manufacturing are all employers located there.

Ripley County presents southeastern Indiana with an interesting mix of small town charm, industry, agriculture and wild forests. It is an interesting part of southern Indiana.
