Median Income - $50,115 Area - 5.9 sq mi ZIP code 47006 Area code(s) 812 Geographical Coordinates 39°17'54?N 85°13'17?W County - Ripley, Franklin Batesville was founded in November 1853 at the intersection of the old Brookville/Napoleon Road and the new Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad. This spot was chosen because of a well dug by settler Teunis Amack. The early locomotives needed frequent stops to replenish the wood used for fuel and water used in the steam engines. The locomotives could fill their water tanks from the well, and the plentiful supply of trees supplied abundant fuel for the engines. The spot must have been favorable, as the town grew. It eventually became the home of many furniture factories which were supplied by the numerous area sawmills which cut the trees into lumber used in the factories. These factories included the American Furniture Company (Romwebers), the Union Furniture Company, Gleeman’s and the Batesville Coffin Company. The latter was purchased by George Hillenbrand and became the nationally known Batesville Casket Company still producing coffins today. Additional manufacturers located in the town are - Hil-Rom, a major hospital manufacturer, Batesville Tool and Die, Med-Mizer and Heartwood Manufacturing. The rail line is still active and is about to be expanded to two lines to help service the new Honda facility in nearby Greensburg. In addition to this, Batesville is located just off I-74, providing easy and quick access to both Cincinnati, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. Additionally, State Road 46, State Road 229, and State Road 129 link the town to the other area towns. Educational opportunities in Batesville include the first rate public school system, St. Louis Elementary School, Ivy-Tech College and the Oldenburg Academy. The Southeastern Indiana YMCA is located on State Road 129 and Margaret Mary Community Hospital on Mulberry Street. Liberty Park and nearby Brum Woods provide ample recreational activities which include sports fields, tennis courts, horseshoe, playground and hiking. Batesville is a community with great schools, parks, and values. It is also conveniently located. With a population of just over 6000, it is large enough to have a vibrant life of its own, small enough for you to know your neighbors. |
