The brick paved walkways, three fountains, and extensive plantings provide a restful place to walk in a serene setting. Designed by German landscape architect George Edward Kessler, the botanical garden opened on October 29, 1916. The Garfield Park Conservatory is, at 10,000 square feet, almost two acres of luxuriant tropical beauty. There are cacao plants, banana trees, fig trees, an extensive orchid collection, and a host of other plantings which can turn a cold winter day into a tropical vacation.
