The daffodil growing season then enters the bud stage, in very late winter to very early spring. The buds emerge, but do not open. At this stage, the flowers will not be bothered by sub freezing temperatures down to about 25 degrees farenheit. Below that and damage may occure. Then the flowers bloom. Depending upon your location, this should occurr from late March until early May, depending upon the daffodil variety and your geographic location. The further north you are, the later the bloom. Purchase different varieties with different bloom times to extend your blooming season. Now the growing season for the daffodil switches to the food gathering stage. The flowers are spent, and seeds are developing in the pod. To shift more of the daffodils nutrients to the bulb, deadhead the plants after bloom, but do not cut the leaves. The leaves will soak up sunshine and use it to manufacture food for the bulb to get through the long winter months. The next stage in the daffodil growing season is the dormant period which commences in mid summer when the foliage dies back and extends to the late winter months when the leaves begin to emerge from the cold, frozen ground. The daffodil may be dug for transplanting after the foliage dies back and stored for planting. Daffodils tend to do best in USDA Planting Zones 3 - 8, but there are daffodil varieties which do well in Zones 7 - 10. |
