Grape Hyacinth - Spring Flowering Bulb © 2006

You will not find anything much easier to care for than the grape hyacinth. The bulbs are planted in the fall about three inches deep and about as far apart. They prefer deep, sandy soil but will tolerate just about any decent soil. Full sun is best, but they will bloom nicely in part shade too.

The grape hyacinth will add spreads of blue color very quickly as the plant spreads by both seed and offsets. To propagate, mark the plants location in the spring when they are blooming. After the tops have died down, dig the bulbs and spread them out to dry in a dry, cool shady area. Then store them in a mesh bag until fall. Plant from September through October. No fertilization is necessary.

The grape hyacinth really requires little care for many years of color and enjoyment.
