Solar Garden Light - The LED Light Bulb

Solar Garden Light - The LED Light Bulb © 2008

The light source of most solar garden lights is a device called an LED, or to use its scientific term, Light Emitting Diode. The LED light bulb is used in many types of devices from indicator lights on electronic devices to giant television screens. They differ from incadescent bulbs in that they do not put off much heat, nor do they have a filament which burns out. They are long lasting and dependable. Solar garden lights will typically have one or two LEDs in them. Some will have more. The more bulbs, of course, the more light they will emit. But they will also have more power requirements, so the unit must have more batteries, or higher efficiency ones.

The light emitting qualities of certain semi-conductor junctions was discovered in the early twentieth century. It took until 1962 before Nick Holonyak Jr was able to successfully implement the technology. Since then the LED light bulb has grown in popularity and now it seems to be almost everywhere. It was soon discovered that different semi-conductor materials produced different colors, so now LED lights are found in a wide spectrum of hues.

Solar garden lights and LED light bulbs go well together. The bulbs operate well on the lower electricity levels produced by the solar cells, they are long lasting and produce adequate light for most purposes.
