There are few culinary delights better than vegetables gathered fresh from your own garden. The
satisfaction is greater when you have grown the plants from seed planted by your own hands. This short
seed planting guide should help you plant your seeds with confidence.
Guide To Vegetable Seeds Which Can Be Started Early Indoors
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, tomato, cucumber, zuchinni or any squash, watermelon, cantalope,
green bean, green pepper, lettuce, brussels sprouts, celery, sweet corn, onions, spinach.
Guide To Vegetable Seeds Which Should Be Sown Direct
Beet, carrot, pumpkin, parsnip, salsify.
Guide To Vegetable Seeds Which Should Be Sown In Individual Pots
Cucumber, Zuchinni, watermelon, cantalope, green bean, sweet corn. These seeds should be sown four
weeks or less from the last expected frost in your area. Plant in a three inch pot and set directly in
garden when they are ready. All of these may also be direct sown in the garden about a week or so
before the last frost date for your area. Mostly these are planted early in pots to provide a small,
earlier crop than the larger, later crops sown direct.
Guide To Vegetable Seeds Which Should Be Sown For Early Transplant Into The Garden
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccolli, lettuce, brussels sprouts, spinach. Plant the seeds about about six
weeks before the last expected frost in your area. The plants may be set into the garden about three
to four weeks before the last expected frost. The plants will stand light frosts, but should be
covered if a very cold spell sets in.
Guide To Vegetable Seeds Which Should Be Sown For Late Transplant Into The Garden
Green pepper, tomato, celery. These should be planted about eight weeks before the last expected frost
in your area. Set the plants in the garden after any threat of frost is past, as these will not
take any frost at all.
Guide To Growing Vegetable Seeds
Except for the vegetable seeds sown directly in their own pots, the seeds will be sown in seed flats
and germinated. About two weeks after germination, the seeds are transplanted to bedding packs to
grow on to transplantable size. If the plants are grown in a window, they may have to be turned
every day to prevent them from leaning to one direction. It is best to have a cold frame or hot
bed to place the bedding packs in.
