Seed Storage © 2007
Once the seeds have been gathered and dried it is time to think about seed storage. Keeping the seed viable and organize until it is time to plant is extrememly important. The best storage conditions for storing seeds is to keep them cold and dry.

Storage of each seed variety should be in individual containers like small resealable plastic bags, 35mm film canisters, or similiar containers. Each container should be labeled as to what kind of seed is stored in it. Once the seed has dried thouroughly, the chaff and other debris should be seperated out and discarded. Empty the seed into its storage container, label and seal.

Storage of individual packets and containers should be undertaken in an organized fashion which will also keep the seeds dry and cool. The containers may be packed in a larger container. A resealable plastic container works best for this. The seed packets can then be placed in this container for storage.

It is helpful to place a packet of some sort of dessicant in the container of seeds. This can be silica gel, which can be purchased at crafts stores. Silica gel packets are also sometimes in electronics and other products when purchased new. These can be saved and used to help keep seeds in storage dry.

The storage container of seeds are best then placed in the crisper drawer of a refrigerator. The seed may be stored there until they are to be planted.
