Seeds of most annual flowers and vegetables start better if a gentle
bottom heat is applied to the seed bed. A seed starting heat mat will provide this
requirement. This model is available from a number of different seed and
nursery companies. The retail price ranges from $27.00 - $30.00. By itself
it will keep a seed flat about ten to twenty degrees above the room
temperature. There is a thermostat availble, which sells for about $40.00,
which will give you more precise control of the soil temperature. These
mats are easy to use, just plug into any 110 volt outlet, put a seed flat
or pots on the mat and you are done. It is available in three sizes,
9" X 19" (17 watts), 20" X 20" (45 watts), and 48" X 20" (107 watts).
Complete instructions for use and some growing suggestions are printed on
the mat.

The thermostat, purchased separetly, will adjust from 68 - 95 degrees.
Maximum of 1000 watts, 8.3 amps 120 volts. It has a six foot power cord,
the temperature sensor is on a 5.5 foot cord. The sensor is placed on the
heat mat under the seed flat. The mat is then plugged into the thermostat.
The thermostat then activates the grow mat when the temperature drops
below the desired temperature.

The seed germination mats pictured here are commercial grade heat mats. A
thermostat, pictured below, is necessary for these heavy duty mats. These
mats are made from heavy duty rubber and seed flats may be stacked seven
high on one of these, provided propagation domes are used and then the
flats are covered with plastic sheeting to conserve heat. The rubber
mats are impervious to agricultural chemicals. This seed mat is available
in two sizes - 22" X 22" and 22" X 60". Use on 120 volt.

The thermostats are available in two sizes. The small one is rated at 720
watts and may be used with one seed heat mat and draws 6.0 amps. The
larger one is 1000 watts, 8.3 amps and has outlets for four heat mats.

This type of seed mat has a wire framework which fits over the heat mat
and the seedling containers. Warm air circulates between the flat and mat,
providing an even flow of heat and eliminating hot spots. The mat uses
110 - 120 volts. The wire cage is chrome. The even heat distribution
promotes strong root growth and produces strong seedlings. The mat is
availble in a variety of sizes from 22" X 11" to 36" X 16". Seed flats
may be stacked.

A high top propagator can do more than start seeds. It would double as a
window greenhouse to grow plants in an unheated porch or greenhouse. You
could also use it to root cuttings. It has a variable thermostat, which
allows precise temperature control. The high top clear plastic dome helps
keep the humidity high and has adjustable vents. This unit is available
from Charleys Greenhouse.
