Speedwell
Veronica spicata
Family - Scrophulariaceae - Snapdragon
Veronica spicata is one of the taller denizens of the perennial garden. It will grow from ten to
thirty six inches tall. The Speedwell plants in my southeastern Indiana garden get closer to thirty
six inches tall and bloom profusely with a nice blue hue. The only problem I have with this plant is
that it tends to grow a bit too tall, falling over in consequence. The flower colors of this cultivar
range from blue to white. Pink can also be found. It blooms in mid June for about six to seven weeks
here.
Speedwell is perennial from USDA Zones 3 - 8 and is native to Eurasia. Many different cultivars of
veronica have been hybridized from the original flower species. It does best in full sun in average,
well drained, garden soil.
Veronica is propagated by cuttings in late spring to early summer. Speedwell will also benefit from
division every three to four years. Seed may also be purchased for some varieties. This may be planted
in early spring for flowers the following years.
Speedwell is a fairly low maintenance perennial flower for the garden. It is fairly free from pests,
needing only division every three to four years to keep it vigorous.
