Mother Of Thyme

Thymus serpyllum - Family Thymus
- Thyme
Mother of Thyme is a delightful ground cover for the perennial garden. It is fragrant, has quaint lavender flowers, is bothered by very few pests and likes poor soil. It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 - 9, grows to about three inches tall and blooms mid to late July here in southeastern Indiana.

It is semi-evergreen, during the middle of winter the plant dies away, to begin growing again with a lush green foliage in late March. It will be attractive until the bloom dies away in mid August. Then it just needs a pruning with a garden shear and it will grow out again and look nice until the winter snows burn it back.

Plant this ground cover near walkways where feet brushing against it releases its fragrance as you walk. It will also cascade over brick walls, and works well planted between stepping stones. It also works well in rock gardens, as it likes rocky, well drained soil and looks nice trailing over rocks and filling in crevices.

Propagate Mother of Thyme by seed, division, or cuttings. Divisions in the fall will begin spreading nicely in the spring. Midsummer cuttings fall planted will also take off nicely the following spring. Seed will take a couple of years to establish itself. It spreads over the perennial garden, filling in spots without becoming overly aggressive, being easily controlled.
