Sweet Pea

This perennial Sweet Pea is also known as the everlasting sweet pea, is a genuine jewel in the garden.
Fragrant, attractive to butterflies, tough and hardy. It is also fairly long lived and produces viable
seed, some plantings survive on abandoned home sites long after the house and other buildings have
disappeared. These plants need some room to climb, the tendrils can reach up to ten feet. It will
need a fence, trellis to climb. Or use it as a groundcover on a hard to maintain slope.
Sweet Pea’s pink flowers commence in early July and continue usually until September, sometimes until
frost. There will also sometimes be white or red flowering plants, also. The foliage is a sort of gray
green, and resembles that of the garden pea , a relative.
Lathyrus latifolius is hardy from USDA Zones 4 - 9, prefers full sun and needs average, well drained
soil. It is a native of Europe. It is extremely low maintenance after it is established, so much so
that it can become a problem if not controlled somewhat.
Propagation of the Sweet Pea is accomplished with seeds, the plants usually reseeding themselves in
any location in which they are happy. They have become established in some wild areas of North
America.
