Sedum Autumn Joy
Sedum X Autumn Joy
Family Crassulaceae - Stonecrop
Sedum Autumn Joy is one of the more desirable perennials in the garden, as it is a handsome plant
throughout the growing season. From the spring when it first starts to emerge until autumn when the
pink blossoms emerge it will give a full growing season of interest and beauty. On some cultivars,
the color will deepen to a sort of rusty red, and it will continue to bloom until frost.
This Sedum is hardy from USDA Zones 3 - 10 and grows to about twenty four inches tall. It likes a
well drained soil that doesn’t need to be especially fertile. Autumn Joy prefers full sun, but will
tolerate some shade, though it may get a bit floppy there. You may cut it back in early summer to
combat this, but you will get smaller flowers. It can also be grown next to something taller and
sturdier to give it a bit of support.
Autumn Joy may be divided in spring or fall, or take terminal shoots as cuttings which will root
fairly quickly. You may also find seed to plant for this sedum. Cut the plants back after frost has
killed them, but don’t mulch if your winters are wet because the plants may not like the extra
moisture.
As the flowers develop you will find many insects are attracted to them, including certain types of
butterflies. You will find very few pests, Japanese Beetles do not seem to like it either.
