Blackberry Lily
Belamcanda chinensis
Family - Iridaceous - Iris
Leopard Flower
The Blackberry Lily is a dependable, dainty lily which blooms from mid July until Mid August. It is
hardy to USDA Zone 5 and likes fairly fertile soil in full sun. It will grow to about thirty six
inches tall or a bit taller. The two inch red spotted orange flowers are a bit unusual and showy and
are what gives this charming plant one of its common names.
Leopard Flower is native to China. The seeds add additional autumn interest to the Blackberry Lily,
as the pods break open revealing a fleshy seed, borne in rows, which resembles the blackberry, the
source of the other common name.
Belamcanda chinensis can be propagated from seed, planted in spring, or division of the roots.
Division can be done in either spring or fall. Blackberry lily will re-seed itself and will also
spread from the roots. It has never become a problem in my garden, but since the birds like the seed,
sometimes the perennial will come up in some rather unusual places.
This unusual perennial will give you two seasons of interested, as the leopard colored flowers bloom
in summer and the blackberry like seeds form in the autumn and usually persist until early
winter.
