Lamium Beacon Silver
lamium maculatum
Family - Lamiaceae
Dead Nettle
Beacon Silver Lamium, or Dead Nettle, is a showy ground cover for the perennial garden. It creeps over
the ground, with a sort of purple red flower which stands out from the silvery white foliage. It is
related to the Stinging Nettle, but this lamium doesn’t have the stinging hairs.
Beacon Silver is hardy in USDA Zones 3 - 8, the northern part of this range preferred by the plant
over the southern range. It does best in the cooler part of the season, by summer it can get sort of
ratty looking. At this time it is best to cut it back and allow it to grow back out. With this
treatment Dead Nettle will look nice again in the cooler autumn weather and will persist until the
hard freezes of winter kill it back.
Growing from four to six inches tall, Beacon Silver will form a low ground cover, perfect for
partially shaded to shaded areas. It prefers moist conditions, but will tolerate dryer areas provided
it is not in full sun.
Beacon Silver is easy to grow and propagate. It may be rooted from cuttings any time during the
growing season, and by division in the spring or fall. Dead Nettle will make a nice addition to any
perennial garden.
