Houttuynia
Houttuynia cordata
Family Sauraceae - Lizards Tail
Chameleon Plant
Houttuynia cordata has value in the perennial garden as a ground cover. The leaves of the cultivar
Chameleon are the chief reason it is planted. Chameleon plant needs moist soil to thrive, too dry
and it will barely survive. It also requires a fairly fertile soil. It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 - 8
and does best in full sun to partial shade. If conditions are dry, more shade will help it. If planted
in dry conditions by mid summer the foliage will fade away, but if in moist soil, it will persist
through the season.
Chameleon Plant will grow to approximately eighteen inches tall, and spreads by underground stems.
It has white flower borne on a spike above the plant. Houttuynia is native to Japan, where it inhabits
boggy sites. If the foliage is bruised it emits a fairly strong, citrusy odor.
Propagate Chameleon Plant by division in the spring or fall, or midsummer cuttings rooted in a
rooting chamber. I have had difficulty with this plant due to the fact that the soil in my garden is
not real rich and definitely is not moist, being located on a slope.
