Geum - Mrs. Bradshaw
Chilean Avens
Geum quellyon - Family - rosaceae
Mrs. Bradshaw’s bright red flowers appear in mid June held high above the dark green foliage. The
flower cluster can be up to twenty four inches high, the clusters of doubled flowers quite showy in
the perennial flower garden. Native to Chile, in South America, this geum can be somewhat finicky in
the Midwestern climate, and downright impossible in the south. It has survived quite nicely in my
garden producing brilliant clusters of flowers.
The plant is somewhat short lived, so semi-annual divisions are necessary to keep the plant in
attendance. Geum can also be propagated from seed, but if you are growing more than one type the
plants will hybridize between species and you may end up with something quite different than planned.
Geum is hardy in USDA Zones 5 - 6.
