Cushion Spurge
Euphorbia epithymoides
Family - Euphorbiaceae - Spurge
The Euphorbias are a large family of plants which include the popular
Poinsettia and about 1600 other species. This particular plant is a
perennial which is quite at
home in your flower garden. It will sometimes be found listed in catalogs and
nurseries as Euphorbia polychroma. Cushion Spurge will grow to about twelve to
fifteen inches tall and will form clumps.
The flowers consist of bright green and yellow bracts and appear in May and
June. If it is happy, the foliage will turn a reddish color in the fall.
Euphorbia is hardy from USDA Zones 4 - 8 and will tolerate full sun but
will do better in partial shade. Any good garden soil will do, as the
Cushion Spurge is adaptable to any decent, well drained soil.
Propagation of Euphorbia epithymoides is by seed, cutting, or division.
Wait about two or three years after initial planting before dividing. Cuttings
may be taken from terminal shoots just after flowering. The plants have re seeded
themselves in my Indiana garden. When handling Euphorbias you may want to
wear gloves, as the plants produce a milky sap which will cause an
allergic reaction in some people.
Euphorbia epithymoides, or Cushion Spurge, is a desirable perennial for the
flower garden. The greenish yellow flower bracts provide a colorful spring
show, the foliage is an attractive green in the summer. The foliage turns
a reddish color in the fall.
