Hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains is a very wonderful experience. The hiker enjoys the
spectacular beauty of the land first hand in a way that it truly cannot be experienced from a
car. The great variety of vegetation, terrain and climate simply cannot be felt any other way
than on the trail. As one hikes the fragrance of hemlock and fir stimulates the senses as much as the wild beauty of the land. A hike in the Great Smoky Mountains can lead along a rushing mountain spring, through fields of wildflowers, rhodendron tunnels or a host of other features. There are hikes to spectacular waterfalls, through awesome forests filled with massive trees, and wonderful glens filled with ferns, mossy rocks and lush evergreens. The Great Smoky Mountains hiking experience is a spiritual experience beyond compare. Some of the trails are near the top of the world as they follow the ridges of the high country. Others wind through valleys along wonderful mountain rivers which cascade over the rocks and boulders which make up their beds. Some climb steeply along the mountain sides and afford some majestic views of the mountains along their path. A Smoky Mountain hike will be an experience you will remember the rest of your life. The pages within this web site will relate some of my Smoky Mountain hiking experiences as well as other adventures in the area. I have hiked many trails in the area and can truly say that no two trails are alike. Each offers the hiker something a bit different. The trails are challenging - after all this is mountain country and a long climb can be very physically taxing. But the tired feeling one experiences after a day on the trail sharpens the appetite for one of the many fine Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Sevierville restaurants. And the hiker will sleep very well after a hike and a meal and maybe a cold beer. |
