Hiking trails in Indiana aren’t hard to find. There are plenty of good places to
hike including State Parks, State Forests, State Recreation Areas, county parks,
city parks and National areas. A day hike in one of Indiana’s State Parks is a pleasant way to spend a day. Indiana has twenty four State Parks scattered over the state. Most are in the western and southern areas. Indiana State Parks all have plenty of trails for hiking, mostly in the moderate to rugged category. The parks all feature something a little different. Spring Mill, in the southern area, has a functioning gristmill and pioneer village. During the summer months the village has artisans working at tasks performed by our pioneer forebears. Mounds State Park, east of Indianapolis, has a series of Indian Mounds which may be hiked around. Ft. Benjamin Harrison is the only State Park in the nation located within the environs of a major city. It is located within Indianapolis and has hiking, golf, saddle barn and inn. More will be included about these individual parks within their individual sections. State Forests also boast some wonderful hiking trails. The best trails in the state are located in the Jackson State Forest in southern Indiana. The State Forest is located in an area called the Knobs. The knobs are fairly high hills which we use to train for mountain hiking when we are going to there to hike. The highest of these knobs is about 985 feet. Not lofty, but high by Indiana standards. There are, in addition to these facilities, dozens of county parks, municipal parks and other areas with some great hiking. Anderson Falls, east of Columbus Indiana, is a good example of this. It is a little off the beaten trail, so a little hard to find, but well worth seeking out. Besides having an impressive waterfall, this small park has a couple of really good hiking trails, one which follows the creek, another which meanders off through the forest east of the falls. This is just a small sample of the day hiking possibilities located in Indiana. As you explore this web site you will find many delightful day hiking possibilities! |
