Tow behind chipper shredders are designed to be pulled behind a lawn tractor or other small tractor. There are generally four types of these type of shredder - chippers. Self powered, PTO powered, vacuum, and wood chippers.
Self powered tow behind gas powered shredder chippers are heavy duty machines designed for the commercial gardener, or large landowner. They have a chute for dropping in leaves, small sticks, shrubby material and other light duty lawn and garden refuse. A chipper chute allows small limbs to be chipped for use as mulch or compost material.
PTO shredder - chippers do not have their own motor. They are designed to work off the PTO (Power Take Off) shaft on a tractor. Most will state the minimum size tractor which will accomodate their power needs.
Vacuum shredder - chippers are designed to be towed behind a garden tractor, while a discharge adaptor vacuums the mower output into a large bin mounted on a trailer. When full, the trailer may be dumped.
PTO powered wood chippers are designed to use the PTO shaft of a tractor to grind larger limbs into mulch. Usually these units do not shred smaller garden material.
