Hand held electric blower vacuum leaf shredders have the advantage of being lighter and more powerful then their gas counterparts. Disadvantages are that you are bound to an extension cord, so they are not suitable for use in remote locations. Most will work with up to 150 feet of extension cords, so you do have some range. Choices include simple blowers, blower/vacuums, and rechargeable battery powered blowers.
Simple electric leaf blowers emit a blast of air anywhere from around 90 to 250 miles per hour. The speeds are adjustable, so the blower can be set to low speed around fragile flowers and shrubs, and set to high speeds to blow large quantities of leaves off lawns and driveways. Be careful on gravel driveways, as the wind blast can turn gravel into small missiles which can harm bystanders.
Hand held electric blower vacuum shredder units will not only blow leaves and other debris into piles, they can be used to suck up leaves, mulch them and put them into a bag for easy disposal. A plus is that the shredded leaves make ideal mulch to add to compost piles or layered around flowers and shrubs. This nutrient rich mulch will keep weeds down, conserve soil moisture and enrich the soil as they decompose. A negative of this type of blower is that the bag is carried around on the blower, and it can get quite heavy as it fills. The vacuum leaf blower works best on dry, newly fallen leaves. Wet leaves can clog the blade and cause eventual burnout of the motor.
Rechargeable blowers are great for small jobs. The battery will power the blower for only a short time, usually around fifteen minutes. But there is no extension cord, so these blowers can be used for short periods of time when there is no electric power available.
Hand held electric blower vacuum shredders work great to pick up leaves, pine needles and other light organic materials. The units will have a nylon blade which is not suitalble for use on heavy materials or sticks.
