Electric shredders and chippers are available in four basic types of product. These are the hand held vacuum/blower units, stationary leaf shredders, stationary light duty shredder - chippers and heavy duty shredder chipper units.
Hand held electric leaf vacuum - blower units are portable, dependable starters which can aid greatly on lawn and garden clean up in the fall. They are also useful for blowing debris off decks and patios any time of the year. These will handle leaves and pine needles very well, but are not meant for heavier materials like sticks and garden waste. Generally they have heavy duty nylon blades and work fine on a one hundred foot or less extension cord.
Stationary leaf shredders have wide mouths and plastic line shredding mechanisms. These electric units do not have blades, so they will not handle heavy material or sticks. They work great for reducing large amounts of leaves or pine needles to use as mulch or composting.
Light duty electric shredder - chipper units have metal blades and a powerful electric motor. These usually have a narrow mouth and a channel for chipping small limbs. Normally they will accept wood limbs up to one and a half inches in diameter. Small limbs under three quarters of an inch work best, larger ones must be fed slowly and carefully.
Heavy duty electric shredder chipper units have wider mouths to accept leaves and other organic materials. These powerful units will accept wood limbs up to two and a half inches in diameter. These units suck a lot of power and need at least a fifteen amp circuit for use, and a twenty amp circuit is safer. These units can be wheeled around the yard for use anywhere with a heavy duty extension cord.
