One way to learn different gardening techniques, plants and methods is to visit a botanical garden. There are botanic gardens in every state depicting gardening techniques for the particular region it is located in. It is adventagous for the gardener, if close to one of these valuable resources, to visit during every season of the year to see how the professional gardeners managing the garden keep the gardens looking nice all year round. There are many different types of botanic gardens. Some are formal, finely manicured gardens reflecting the French type of garden design. Others are styled after the more informal British style. There are also native plant botanical gardens which are planted in native plants, often in a very informal, natural style. The home gardener can learn valuable lessons from each type. Botanic gardens often plant the newest varieties of plants, thus allowing the gardener to see how these plants react to different planting schemes and habitats. You may also find older varieties in the garden and undoubtedly unusual or hard to find plants will also be found. Many of these gardens sell plants to the public, allowing the gardener to grow the same varieties. Nature gardens are sometimes planted in state parks, showing the native flora in the region. These botanic gardens are valuable to the gardener in learning the natives which can be incorporated into home settings. The size and habits of these plants can be observed firsthand before plantings are made into the home landscape. |
